Navigraph Charts is a navigation reference tool for cockpit use and preflight planning. It pulls airport, approach, and en-route data into one application, replacing paper stacks with searchable digital plates. For pilots or flight simulation fans, this aviation charts app gives a practical route to professional-grade maps on an Android device.
Quicker than a paper binder, but not a flight computer
Most of my time inside the app is spent matching the route from a flight planner to the correct airport pages. The chart index behaves like a proper airport database, so searching by airport name or ICAO code is quick. Because I do most flight planning on Android, this search speed matters more than fancy graphics. It takes seconds to reach the ILS plate for the runway I expect, and the layout stays close to the chart conventions used in pilot training.
The flaws that become obvious after regular use
Let's be honest: Navigraph Charts is not a friction-free tool. The first reality check is a mandatory subscription: downloading the app is free, but without an active Navigraph account the chart data stays locked, and a lapsed subscription leaves you with a login screen and a handful of sample maps. The second issue is physical. On a phone, approach plates for complex STARs become readable only after repeated zooming, which is awkward when you are also managing engine settings. Battery drain becomes obvious during long preflight sessions, and there is no in-app dimming control, so night work means adjusting the whole phone brightness manually.
How I decide who should and should not use it
I would not hand this software to someone who expects an interactive flight computer. Navigraph Charts assumes you already understand what a minimum descent altitude means, how to read an ILS procedure, or why a missed approach matters. It will not generate a route from point A to point B. For a real pilot who wants a clean backup to avionics, or a simulator enthusiast chasing authentic workflows, this app fills a specific role. Just keep the subscription alive and carry a power bank.
Installation and first login: what to expect
Setup is not complicated, but it is not instant either. After installing the APK or the official store build, the app asks for a Navigraph account and then synchronizes with the provider's servers. Without a subscription you only see the sample content, so the real value only appears after login. I recommend downloading the airports you fly most often before heading out, because refresh times depend heavily on connection speed. On Android 5.0 and newer, the app installs cleanly, but large regional chart packs will eat your storage faster than you expect.
