Why a Dedicated Speedometer Still Makes Sense

I’ve been using Speedometer for about six months now, mostly on my daily train commute and occasional long drives. At first I thought my phone’s built-in maps were enough, but the constant zooming and lag made real-time speed checks frustrating. This app fixes that by giving you a clean, always-on speed reading – no clutter, no ads interrupting every few seconds. The core value is simple: you get a live speedometer and odometer that works on any moving vehicle, not just your car. I wrote it down to plan arrival times more accurately, especially when the bus driver decides to floor it or crawl through traffic.

What the App Does Well (and Where It Falls Short)

The best part is the heads-up display (HUD) mode. I stick my phone on the dashboard in night mode, and the numbers stay readable even in bright sun – the auto-brightness actually works. Speed limit warnings are configurable, so I set a 30 km/h alert for school zones. But there’s a catch: the GPS needs a clear view of the sky. Inside a tunnel or a dense urban canyon, the reading freezes or jumps by 5–10 km/h. That’s not the app’s fault – it’s a hardware limitation – but it means you can’t rely on it 100% in subway systems or underground parking lots. Also, battery drain is noticeable if you leave HUD on for over an hour; I keep a charger handy.

Practical Customization and a Few Honest Gripes

You can switch between kph, mph, knots, and meters per second – I use knots sometimes for fun when my friend asks how fast his bike goes. The trip history saves automatically, which is handy for logging daily distances and comparing routes. However, the history export feature is missing; you can only view it inside the app. If you want to share a log, you’ll have to screenshot. Another thing: the odometer accuracy drifts by about 2–3% on winding roads with lots of turns, because GPS averages path length. For straight highway trips it’s spot-on. So if you need precise distance for expense claims, this isn’t a replacement for a dedicated bike computer.

Who Should Download It – and Who Should Skip

I recommend Speedometer to anyone who regularly takes public transport or drives and wants a second speed reference without staring at a tiny map icon. It’s also great for cyclists who want a simple speed display without signing up for a fitness platform. But if you’re a professional driver needing certified accuracy, or you rely on offline maps (this app needs a data connection for stable GPS lock), look elsewhere. The interface is clean but not flashy – no animations, no social sharing. That’s a pro for me, but some might call it boring. In the end, it does exactly what it promises: shows your speed in real time, helps you plan trips, and doesn’t get in your way.
